Starting this blog was something that I contemplated for years before actually doing a damn thing about it. I think most of us have had one of those creative passion projects that we talk about with our spouses/friends, probably click “add to cart” on some accessories for said project, but ultimately don’t follow through with because of work, or kids, or — if we’re being honest — sometimes it’s more fun to envision the outcomes of our creative pursuits rather than going through the actual process of creating the thing.
And some recovering perfectionists out there might relate to this feeling — “if it’s not absolutely perfect, then I don’t want to put my name on it.”
It feels cringey to think we must experience the amateur phase before we get to the mastery phase — if we even get there at all.
But here’s me giving YOU permission to be cringey for a minute and start something you’re passionate about even if you kind of suck at it. Because I’m discovering that it FEELS GOOD TO CREATE, AND NOT JUST CONSUME.
This blog may go nowhere, or may never get read by anyone other than a couple of friends I FORMALLY ANNOUNCED my writing project to (why do I feel the need to do that?) but I’m giving myself permission to try out this blogging thing and see what happens.
So with that preamble out of the way (is this like the annoying start of a recipe that everyone skips to get to the actual instructions? 😬 ) here is the first edition of what I’m calling “Friday Five” - a roundup of five things I’m vibing on this week and think you might, too.
Shopping: OK, big PSA for my Austin girlies… the French fashion brand Sézane has opened a pop-up store in Austin on South Congress starting TODAY! I don’t feel like I’ve seen any promotion for this so I’m here to do the Lord’s work. If you need me, I’ll probably be in the dressing room for the next six hours. I am obsessed with everything on their site, but especially this, this, this, and this for spring.
Cooking: An oven-roasted vegetable pasta sauce over some leftover spaghetti. I’ve been on a personal mission to be as resourceful (read: cheap/lazy) in the kitchen as possible, so using up random ingredients while making something delicious is like the next achievement unlocked. This sauce-making method has me converted. The recipe I followed was in Russian (LOL) and I had to use the translator app to follow it but I found this one in English that’s got the basic gist.
Drinking: This unpretentious but still super solid French table rosé. I tend to be especially snobby about my rosé (IYKYK) but this little gem from the Southern Rhône is made by a legit French wine-making family that also makes super high-end Chateneuf-de-Pape. And it’s priced between $6-8 a bottle so you can let the vino FLOW while you’re imbibing this weekend.
Watching: The Oscars is on Sunday night - I’ll be watching for the fashion lewks of course, and also for the amazing red carpet commentary of the iconic Heather McMahan (which *humble brag* I was once told could be my sister. Best compliment ever.)
Loving: This amazing creator @ms_hdic whose motivational speeches I save in my instagram files for when I need a bump of positivity. Watch this for a lil’ Bengal Tiger boost of your own today. 🐅
I hope you have a fabulous weekend! 🫶
